In the fight between the Church of Scientology and Anonymous, the popular forum site WhyWeProtest was compromised last night around 8PM EST.

The details of the attack are known to be an email account compromised that lead to a shell account on the server with root access. A patched SSH daemon was installed that recorded the passwords used to login to the server.

At this point the staff of WhyWeProtest are working on recovering the data. If this recovery is not sucessful within 72 hours a backup will be restored from October 4th, 2008.

The administrators of WhyWeProtest will also be addressing security issues with the server and taking a more proactive role in the security of the server rather than passively locking the server down. Daily audits will be done as well as a backup system that utilizes multiple servers throughout the world and secure communications methods will be discussed.

For up to the minute information on the progress please join irc.whyweprotest.net in the channel #WhyWeProtest. An embedded IRC client is provided on www.whyweprotest.net
